Funeral Homes the Columbia, South Carolina Metro Area

In the Columbia, South Carolina metropolitan area, six locations across two cities serve families throughout the Midlands region. These locations are concentrated in Columbia and Lexington, with additional coverage extending to West Columbia and surrounding Lexington County communities. Across the market, available services include burial, cremation, funeral and memorial services, veterans services, and pre-need planning, with dedicated cemetery options available at multiple locations.

  • Thompson Funeral Homes - Columbia, located on Leesburg Road in Columbia, is a full-service funeral home co-located with Greenlawn Memorial Park on the same grounds. The Thompson brand has served the Columbia area since 1928, with the current Leesburg Road location established in 2013 through the merger of Thompson Funeral Home with Greenlawn Memorial Park. The facility includes a chapel, reception and event space, and direct access to the adjoining cemetery.
  • Greenlawn Memorial Park, also on Leesburg Road in Columbia, is a perpetual care cemetery established in 1937 and among the first of its kind in the Columbia area. The park constructed the first granite and marble mausoleum in the Columbia area, which remains a central feature of the grounds. Greenlawn is the resting place of Matthew J. Perry, Jr., the first African American U.S. District Judge in South Carolina, and has hosted an annual Easter Sunrise Service in partnership with the Lower Richland Ruritans since 1960.
  • South Carolina Cremation Society is a cremation service in West Columbia, established in 2013, serving families throughout the Midlands region and across South Carolina. The location operates as a direct cremation provider for families who prefer cremation without traditional funeral home services, with identification viewings and private viewings available on-site. Reviewers consistently describe the process as straightforward and free of sales pressure.
  • Thompson Funeral Homes - Lexington, located on Augusta Road in Lexington, is a full-service funeral home opened in 1999 as the Thompson brand's second location, established to serve the growing population of Lexington County. The facility includes multiple chapels and reception and event space. Spanish-language services are available.
  • Woodridge Funeral Home in Lexington is a full-service funeral home co-located with Woodridge Memorial Park on the same property, operating as a combination facility since the funeral home opened to the public in 2007. The facility includes a mausoleum chapel seating 50, with direct access to the adjoining cemetery. Spanish-language services are available.
  • Woodridge Memorial Park, co-located with Woodridge Funeral Home in Lexington, is a cemetery founded in 1976 whose signature gardens were originally developed from founder Edith Strasburger's personal plant collection. The park introduced Pine Haven Cremation Estates, the first dedicated cremation garden in Lexington County, offering above-and-below-ground interment options for cremated remains. The grounds include a mausoleum chapel, cremation gardens and niches, private and family cemetery lots, and a one-acre pond with a gazebo available for memorial gatherings.

Families selecting among these locations typically consider geographic proximity to home, place of worship, or cemetery; whether they need a facility with on-site chapel and reception space or prefer a streamlined arrangement office; and whether cemetery access at the same address is a priority. Locations in this market vary in facility type from full-service funeral homes with multiple chapels and event space to a dedicated direct cremation provider with no chapel or reception space. Across several locations in this market, reviewers consistently recognize individual staff members by name — a pattern that may reflect the interpersonal service approach common to the Thompson and Woodridge brands in this area.

I am so thankful that we turned to Woodridge Memorial Park and Funeral Home to help us following the death of our mother. From the guidance (and patience) provided by Terry to the multiple follow ups by Teresa, we have felt needed support. We ended up with an error on the death certificate that required correction due to probate issues in another state. To be clear, the error was not the fault of Woodridge. Even so, Teresa told us not to worry about it and that she would take care of it. She worked with the health department which corrected the error. I actually don’t know if we would have been successful in getting this done without her. My only job was to sign off on the correction - Teresa took care of the rest, keeping us informed at every step. From the moment that hospice reached out to Woodridge until now, months later, the folks there have treated us like family. We are forever grateful.
