" Margaret A. “Peggy” (Wegiel) Smith, 63, of Shady Brook Lane, died Friday at Bay State Medical Center. Born in the Bondsville section of Palmer, April 1, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Dorothy I. (Keyes) Wegiel. Peggy grew up in S. Belchertown and graduated from Belchertown High School. She later achieved an Associate’s Degree from Bridgewater State College. She worked as a team leader in the Export Department of Smith & Wesson for 13 years. She had previously spent 19 years at the former Belchertown State School in many administrative capacities. Peggy will be remembered as a woman who was always the life of the party and loved practical jokes. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 20 years, William F. Smith, her son Douglas Gendron and his wife Olivia of Springfield, and her two daughters Kathleen Banas and her husband John, and Suzanne Gendron all of Palmer. She is also survived by a sister Patricia Wegiel of S. Belchertown, and a brother William Wegiel and his wife Anna of Cape Cod along with many nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives. A service in her memory will be held on Friday, September 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home, 1475 N. Main St, (Rte 20) followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, September 23 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to the Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY 14263. "
