]Matilda Louise (Davis) Slocum, 86, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on Monday morning, March 11, 2013, at the Fountains senior living community, of natural causes related to old age.. Born on April 7, 1926 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Lyle Alton Davis, Senior, and Lillian Matilda Smith, she lived in the Whaling City and graduated in 1944 from New Bedford High School. Mrs. Slocum did clerical work in a business office after her graduation. On October 20, 1951, she married Lester Ainsworth Slocum, Junior, of New Bedford, and they lived in Braintree, Massachusetts; Norwell, Massachusetts; Greenhills, Ohio; Stamford, Connecticut, and Annandale, Virginia with sons Scott, Jay and Donald. During those years, she was actively involved in the Norwell Women's Club, and she sang in the choir for the United Church of Christ in Norwell. Matilda developed a real love of golf, and spent many happy hours on courses in Massachusetts, Virginia and Florida. She was fond of sewing her own clothes, and she braided a number of beautiful rugs in the 1960's and 1970's. In 1984, Mr. and Mrs. Slocum began semi-retirement in Palm Coast, Florida, where they resided until February of 2010. During their twenty-six years of residency in that part of Florida, she enjoyed bowling, riding bicycles, playing bridge, and she indulged in her passion for golf. While a member at the Pine Lakes Country Club of Palm Coast, Florida, she scored holes-in-one on four separate occasions. She and Mr. Slocum traveled extensively throughout North America on automobile and bus tours, and took trips to the Caribbean as well. After selling their Palm Coast home, they moved to an independent retirement community in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; an older brother, Lyle Alton Davis, Junior; and by her husband Lester, who passed away in October 2010. She is survived by her sons Scott Slocum of Olathe, Kansas; Jay Slocum of Sterling, Virginia; and Donald Slocum, of Gulfport, Florida, as well as daughters-in-law Catherine Slocum, Pam Slocum and Jenifer Slocum. She is also survived by six grandchildren: David, Joshua, Margaret, Nicole and Mariah Slocum, and Brent Glassgen. Service Information
