Morton Sherman 86 of St. Petersburg passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013 in the evening. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to St. Petersburg in 1967. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mort graduated from Crane Technical High School and Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked as a chemical engineer for Zonolite, Celotex and Jim Walter Research Corporation in materials research and product development, was a life member of the American Society for Testing and Materials and later founded his own engineering consulting firm. Mort was also a St. Petersburg community organizer, establishing and actively leading the Crossroads Area Neighborhood Association and serving as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization for more than 20 years. An active member of Congregation B'nai Israel for all the 45 years he lived in St. Pete, Mort was a beloved fan of the Bucs and Rays. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverly, his three children Janet (Shmuel Deitel), Nancy (Ed Sherman) and Alan (Ginny Allen-Terry), his nine grandchildren, and his siblings Dot (Mort) Goldenberg and Herb Sherman. Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 at David C. Gross Funeral Home in St. Petersburg. Burial will be in Chicago IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Congregation B'nai Israel, 300 58th Street North, St. Petersburg FL 33710. David C.
