Anne Karpay 26 of Nashville TN passed away January 5, 2008. Anne was born in Tampa in 1981, and attended school in Land O Lakes, where she played volleyball at Pineview Middle School, ran track and was captain of the swim team for Land O Lakes High School, and swam for both the University Swim Association and the Pasco Suncoast Swim Team where she was also team captain. She played the flute in the band, but her love was playing the piano. She represented Pasco County in the Dreamers and Doers contest. She placed 7th in breaststroke in Florida State competition while attending LOL High School and set many school swim records that still stand, she competed numerous times at the Florida Junior Olympics, was a Florida Academic Athlete, and a winner of the Florida Young Scientist Award that let her spend a summer during her high school studying at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Anne graduated Land O Lakes High School as her Class Valedictorian in 1999, attended Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate degree majoring in both biology and history, where she graduated with honors. She was in the Vanderbilt University graduate school PhD program of the department of Biochemistry, specifically in the field of membrane protein biophysics. She completed her research and only had her dissertation to defend to graduate. She was a Vucept board member and president of the Vanderbilt Hillel. All who knew her thought she was a true competitor and winner in the wide variety of subjects and events she attempted, from her academics - grades, speech contests, science fairs, scientific presentations, research; to her sports - water skiing, white water rafting, swimming, running, triathlons, bicycling, and what she considered a major milestone of running and completing the entire 26.2 mile Music City Marathon while she had cancer. Anne knew how to excel and succeed; she knew no limits. She was very strongly self motivated, knew how to prepare for success, and lived her too short life to the fullest including traveling to study at the University of London in the United Kingdom, touring Europe, had her Bat Mitzvah on top of Masada in Israel, and made professional presentations both nationally and internationally. She loved activities such as camping, hiking on the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies, hiking to Angels Landing in Zion National Park, and was equally at home at the theatre, going ballroom dancing, attending the symphony, and dining with Nobel Laureates from her field in science. Anne had a heroic 4-year battle against breast cancer. She is survived by her parents Dr. Richard I. and Barbara C. Karpay of Land O Lakes; her grandparents Bobbie & Irwin J. Karpay of Wesley Chapel, and Evelyn & Harold W. Canfield of Knoxville, Tennessee; and her most special friend, classmate, colleague, and true love, William S. Bush of Nashville, Tennessee. She had an instant smile that was a mile wide, a laugh that filled the room, and bright sparkling eyes. She left many positive impressions on many teachers, friends, competitors, and family. She will be dearly missed but not forgotten. Funeral services will be 1:30PM Monday, January 7th at LOYLESS FUNERAL HOME, 5310 Land O Lakes Blvd, Land O Lakes under the direction of David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Beth David Chapel, St. Petersburg. Interment will follow in Gan Shalom Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to SPORE in breast cancer, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Nashville TN. 37232. Service Information
