Melvin Waino Borin, 81, Cloquet, died Friday, February 18, 2005 in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. He was born October 24, 1923 in Cloquet, the son of Vaino and Jennie (Lamminen) Borin. Melvin married Ivy Lodge on December 8, 1944 in London. Melvin worked as an electrical mechanic for Northwest Paper and Potlatch Corporation for 44 ½ years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 in Cloquet, Potlatch Quarter Century Club, Finlandia Beach Club, served as Treasurer for Local #97 and was a member of the Credit Committee of the Potlatch Credit Union. He enjoyed farming, fishing, spending time with his family and "putzing". He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Borin. Melvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ivy, of Cloquet; five children, Maureen (Paul) Gunderson of Duluth, JoAnn (George) Mitchell of Brooklyn Center, Jennie (Peter) Boedigheimer and Wayne (Debby) Borin, both of Cloquet and Marianne (Roland) Hoffman of Alta Loma, CA; 10 grandchildren, Jean (Greg) Olson, Jeff (Wendy) Gunderson, Scott (Michelle) Mitchell, Lisa (Jamie) Bushey, Darren (Michelle Clay) Mitchell, Sarah (Joel) Strand, Kaija Borin, Jack Borin, Ryan Hoffman and T. J. Hoffman; 10 great grandchildren, Jacob, Jeremy, Skylar, Josh, Zach, Hope, Ashley, McKenzie, Spencer, Megan and another great grandchild due in September; one brother, Arnold (Lorene) Borin of Cloquet; and two sisters, Rosalyn (Paul) Pohjola of Cloquet and Lillian Powers of Seattle, WA. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet. Burial will be in the spring in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.
