Joseph James Johnson, born in Binghamton, NY to Joseph F. Johnson and Sophie Nabywaniec-Johnson. He graduated from St. Mary’s school in 1958, Susquehanna Valley High 1963, Broome Tech 1965, and with a BA from Harpur College 1968. He received a master’s degree in library science from SUNY Albany. Joe worked at the Binghamton Public Library from 1969 to 1974, when he started at Monterey CA Public Library where he worked until 2014. He is survived by several cousins and his close friend Michael Matonick.
A Mass of Christian Burial with be held August 11, 2025, at 10:00 am San Carlos Cathedral Church 500 Church Street Monterey CA 93940. Graveside service to follow at San Carlos Cemetery 792 Freemont Street, Monterey CA 93940. In Lieu of flowers please make donations to The California History Room, In care of Monterey Public Library Trust Fund.
