Russell "Rusty" Lewis Andrews
June 11th, 1958 - September 1st, 2025
Russell Lewis Andrews, known as Rusty among his family and friends, was born on June 11, 1958, in Los Angeles, California. He left this world on September 1, 2025, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with infections exacerbated by Parkinson’s Disease. As the eldest child of Horace and Jennifer Andrews (née Sydelle Stamler), Rusty displayed extraordinary abilities from a young age. His childhood was characterized by an exceptional memory, sharp visual recognition, and a natural talent for drawing and painting, all of which hinted at the artistic path he would later pursue.
Rusty’s artistic evolution took a pivotal turn during his studies at the California Institute of the Arts, where he initially set out to concentrate on drawing, animation, and film. However, his creative journey expanded significantly when classmates encouraged him to delve into music performance. This new direction not only strengthened his friendships but also laid the foundation for a prolific career in composing music for various media, including film, television, and advertising. His extensive portfolio includes notable projects such as Rugrats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Adventures in Wonderland, Hansel & Gretel, and the score for the Academy Award-winning short film The Accountant (2001), highlighting his versatility and innovative spirit within the industry.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Rusty was a man of varied interests and passions. He thrived as a downhill ski racer, developed a keen appreciation for art collecting, and tended to a beautiful garden, all while indulging his culinary skills as a gourmet cook. His love for animals was evident, particularly in his deep affection for his dogs, Karla and Mac. Rusty’s vibrant personality was encapsulated in his email handle, Superextra, which reflected the brilliance, humor, and exuberance that defined his life. He approached each day with a profound sense of curiosity and wonder, savoring every note of music and ray of sunshine. His creative spirit never waned; he sought to heal the world through love, dedicating his Mondays as “mend-days” to touch hearts and spread kindness.
Rusty leaves behind his beloved companion, Gretchen; his sister Monica and her family; and a wide circle of devoted friends who cherished his extraordinary talents and unforgettable spirit.
