Obituary
Peter Herbert Richmond was born on December 29, 1937, to Hilda Lynch Richmond and Gould Spofford Richmond in Orford, New Hampshire. After graduating from Orford High School, he obtained a B.A in English from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Tuck School of Business. He married Anne Sophie Braestrup in 1958 with whom he had three children, Catherine, Karen, and Jeanette.
Peter began his business career at Arthur Andersen and then worked for Ford Motor Company before leaving the large corporate world to work in smaller businesses, settling at Globe Manufacturing Company in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, as its CFO for many years.
After Peter’s marriage to Anne ended, Peter met and married Ann Waldon and moved to Laconia, New Hampshire with her. Ann sadly died of cancer soon after their wedding, but Peter remained in Laconia to help raise his stepchildren until Ann’s youngest son, Ben, left for college.
Then began the adventure of Peter’s life. He had always wanted to teach and moved to Irkutsk, a Siberian city in Russia, to teach business classes there through the University of Maryland University College (now University of Maryland Global Campus). In Irkutsk, Peter met the love of his life, Tamara Selyangina. What began as a friendship blossomed into romance and a deep love after Tamara’s first husband died.
While living in Siberia, Peter enjoyed hiking in the countryside, visiting Tamara’s family, and attending outdoor hockey games (in Siberia). Throughout his life, Peter was always interested in history and politics and treasured his experience in Russia as he learned about its fascinating history and culture. Eventually, Peter and Tamara moved to Schwabisch Gmund in Germany, where Peter continued his teaching career at one of UMUC’s German campuses.
When Tamara was offered a position at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, they moved to Monterey, California, and remained there for the rest of Peter’s life. Peter was able to continue teaching, a profession he loved and enjoyed. He taught business courses at the University of California Monterey Bay for many years before retiring.
Peter died on September 10, 2025 after a lengthy struggle with myasthenia gravis and other health problems.. He is survived by his beloved wife, Tamara Selyangina; children and stepchildren, Catherine Richmond McCullough, Jeanette Camara Richmond, William
Walden, Ben Walden, and Olga Jerebtsova; grandchildren, Erik Fulton, Kale Camara, Anna Marie Camara, Vera Mixon and Sasha Comartin, and great-grandchildren Eliza Fulton and Alex Fulton. He was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Richmond, grandson, Christopher Bryant Fulton, and brother, Robert Richmond.
