James “Jim” Richard Raney, 80, of Weiser, died Sunday, October 26, 2025. He was born in Boise, Idaho, on January 3, 1945. He enlisted in the Army in 1964 and served in Vietnam. He was a Sky Soldier of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and received the Purple Heart Medal due to being wounded in action and the Bronze Star Medal for “meritorious service,” along with other various awards. During this time, Jim and his brothers, Ed and William, put out an album titled, “Songs of the Sky Soldier”.
Jim was a member of the Homedale Gun Club and always looked forward to gun competitions, like the Egg Shoot competition, along with other hobbies. He attended Army reunions when possible and enjoyed reminiscing with his Army brothers. He enjoyed playing bingo at the Weiser Senior Center and spending time with his dog, Bella. Jim retired from Carnation Company after 30 years of employment as a maintenance mechanic and boiler operator.
Jim married his wife, Elva Gonzales, on September 30, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Elva; sons, Travis and Matthew of Nampa and Dustin of Hazelton; daughters, Angelic of Nampa and Susan; and sisters, Nancy Fernandez and Phyllis Goss of Caldwell. He was blessed with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. He will be missed by his loved ones for the great husband, father, grandfather, and friend that he was.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Treasure Valley Worship Center, 50 W. Spicewood Drive in Meridian, with Pastor Gordon Slyter officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow at 1:00 pm at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 N. Horseshoe Bend Road in Boise, with a reception to follow afterwards back at the Treasure Valley Worship Center. Services are under the direction of Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. (208) 459-0833
