Mamie Marie Short of Kingsport went home to be with the Lord on December 1, 2025. She was a member of Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church for many years. Marie was a caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and aunt. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, cooking, going to church, crocheting, gardening, canning, making apple butter and jelly, watching football, basketball and baseball games, and more specifically, cheering for the University of Tennessee football and basketball teams. Her kindness, strength and spirited personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She most recently said her secret to longevity is to “be thankful for each day and make every day a happy day”.
Preceding her in death were her parents Lee and Leola Kistner Cox, her first beloved husband, James Howard Hite (married over 52 years), second husband Curtis Short (married over 2 years), three special brothers Kenneth E. Cox of Gray, TN, Gordon Cox (Betty) of Jonesboro, TN, and Harlis Cox (Rosie) of Kingsport, TN, and daughter-in-law, Linda Hite.
Surviving are her loving and devoted son, Bobby (B.J.) Hite, granddaughters Lisa Kitzmiller, Tina (Shane) Duncan, Angie (Brian) Boling, Jennifer (Kenny) Hite, great grandchildren Chase Duncan, McKenzie (Blake) Lowe, Parker (Christian) Bowman, Eva (Josh) Rose, Whitney Linkous, Bethany Linkous, and six great-great grandchildren – Sutton Lowe, Saylor Lowe, Miles Bowman, Indy Bowman, Tripp Bowman, Riley Rose, and special nephew Stacy (Sara) Cox, great nephew Harrison (Ashleigh) Kincaid, great niece Onise Cox, and special sister-in-law Jimmie Cox. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, church family and Meals on Wheels friends.
A graveside service will be held at Eastern Star Cemetery on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 2:00 pm with Pastor Kevin Rose of Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church, 153 Eastern Star Exit, Kingsport, TN, 37663.
