Joseph “Joe” McElhannon, 49, of Rome, Oregon, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, leaving behind a legacy of service, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.
Joseph was born on May 18, 1976, in Redding, California, to Kay and Joel McElhannon. As the son of two military parents, he spent much of his childhood moving from place to place before eventually putting down roots in Oregon. At age 15, Joseph and his father moved to Rome, Oregon, where he played an instrumental role in opening and running Rome Station, the community’s central hub for food, fuel, and connection.
Hardworking and dedicated, Joseph spent 25 years as a tow truck driver alongside his father and served as an EMT for 10 years, always stepping forward to help those in need. His willingness to assist anyone who crossed his path—whether local or just passing through, made him a trusted and beloved figure in the community.
In 2006, Joseph met the love of his life, Lisa. They were married in 2008, and in 2012 welcomed their greatest joy, their son Raymond. Joseph cherished listening to music, fishing with Raymond, spending time with family, and offering a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He will be remembered for his warm heart, quiet strength, steady humor, and the care he showed others without ever expecting anything in return.
Joseph was preceded in death by his mother, Kay; both sets of grandparents; his uncles Ray and Tim; his cousins Brandi and Cassie; and his Aunt Jan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa; his son, Raymond; and his father, Joel. He is also survived by his sister Jennifer, her husband Bruce, and their sons Mark, Caden, and Will; his sister Rebecca, her husband Max, and their children Emily, Maxie, and Rosie. Additional survivors include his uncle Jerry and wife Aunt Veva; uncle Dallas; uncle Craig and wife Aunt Trish; aunt Mary; and many cousins, extended family members, and friends.
A Memorial Service for Joseph will be held on December 27th at 1:00 PM at the Arock Community Gym. A potluck will follow the service. The family will be providing the meat and rolls, and all who wish to join in honoring Joseph’s memory are welcome.
A larger Celebration of Life will be held in the spring, allowing extended family, friends, and community members to gather when weather and travel are easier.
Joseph’s absence leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved him and in the community he served so faithfully. His kindness, dedication, and quiet heroism will be remembered always.
