Douglas Jay Koontz, 71, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2025. He was born on April 5, 1954, in Hagerstown, Maryland. Douglas was the son of the late Plummer E. Koontz, Jr., and the late Martha Boyer Koontz of Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
He was an honors graduate of Coatesville Area Senior High School and went on to attend the Pennsylvania State University (Class of 1976), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. While at Penn State, Douglas was a brother of Theta Chi and played trumpet in the Penn State Blue Band.
After graduating, Douglas moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he lived for the remainder of his life. On June 25, 1978, he married Debra Sue Koontz (née Biondi), formerly of Ridge, Maryland, who was then living in Tucson. They remained married until Debra’s passing on August 23, 2015.
In Tucson, Douglas was a proud 42-year business owner of the successful auto interior repair company, Vinyl Quik. He enjoyed playing the trumpet, encouraging others to play music, playing online games with friends and family, and was an accomplished chess player. Douglas made a lasting and loving impression on all who knew him.
He is survived by his five children: Jason, Stephanie, Makenzie, Ryley “Belle,” and Madalyn. He is also survived by his brother, Gary Koontz (Linda) of Crossville, Tennessee; his sister, Kathy Hawk (Ron) of Coatesville, Pennsylvania; and many other loving family members. He was predeceased by his brother Donald E. Koontz of Huntsville, Alabama.
Burial will be held with immediate family only on February 6, 2026, at All Faiths Cemetery. A memorial celebration of Douglas’s life will be held at Bring’s Broadway Chapel on February 7, 2026, beginning at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Save the Music Foundation. Arrangements are being handled by Bring’s Broadway Chapel.
