Lonnie Leroy Widler 1951-2026  

A man of quiet brilliance and principled service, Lonnie lived a life defined by steady dedication, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the world’s stillness. A veteran of the United States Navy, Lonnie served two years during the Vietnam War, an experience that helped shape his lifelong sense of discipline and duty. Following his service, he dedicated his career to Sandia National Laboratories, where he remained a mainstay for decades, respected for his technical excellence and reliability.

Beyond his professional life, Lonnie had the soul of an artist. He was a gifted observer who found immense beauty in the rugged landscapes and towering formations of the New Mexico desert. He had a rare patience for the 'perfect shot,' a trait that defined both his photography and his love for basketball. He deeply respected the sport’s heart and discipline, whether he was playing with his children or watching as a dedicated fan.

He is survived by his children, Gabriel (and wife Heather) and Angela, and his three grandchildren, Tristan, Jaxson, and Apple, who were his greatest pride. In keeping with Lonnie’s quiet nature and his love for the high desert, his family will honor his memory privately. His children will return him to the landscapes he so dearly loved. Gabriel and Angela remember their father as a constant, steady North Star, someone who didn't need to say much to make those around him feel safe and supported.

Though he never cared to be the center of attention, Lonnie’s impact on our lives was profound.
