Doug las "Gunny Mix" was born on November 26, 1947 in Paterson, New Jersey to the late Katherine Thompson (Mix) and the late William Mix. He was the seventh born of nine children. He passed away in Aurora, CO on July 20, 2020. Doug las graduated from John F. Kennedy high school in Paterson, NJ in 1966 and immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served in Vietnam. His final rank was Gunnery Sergeant. While serving our country, he received many honors and medals including the following: Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, USMC and Navy Achievement, Marine Corps Expeditionary, US Vietnam Service, Vietnam Wounded, Vietnam Campaign, US Corp Good Conduct, Outstanding Volunteer Service, RVN Gallantry Cross, Civil Action Honor, National Defense Service, Kosovo Campaign, and War on Terrorism Expeditionary. Gunny Mix was a Protector! He watched over his friends and family and you never wanted to make him mad. His family describes him as being caring, a comedian, helpful, brave, proud, a jokester, silly, and most of all proud to be a United States Marine. One thing he loved was spending time with his grandchildren. He saw at least one of them every weekday for twenty years! He volunteered his time for Military Veterans and causes and Christmas toy drives. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Known as "Uncle Dougie" by his family, he is preceded in death by four sisters: Lenora Viola Mix (Tiebout), Gloria Mix (May), Bessie Mix (DeGroat), Louise Doris Mix (Smith); and three brothers: William F. Mix, Wilbur Mix, and Karl Mix. He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife of fourteen years, Leslie June Mix (Adair); three children: Zyola T. Mix, Cher Z. (Andre) Gillespie, and Daniel R. Boyles all of Aurora, Colorado; one brother, Wilbert (Jill) Mix of Boston; one sister Katherine Mix (Talmadge) of Detroit; four grandchildren: Khalil T. Sellers, Andre "AJ" Gillespie, Andromeda T. Mix, and Kanoa A. Gillespie all of Aurora, CO, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relative and friends. Committal services with military Full Honors will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetary at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the Purple Heart Foundation.
