Donald McKinley Rakes

Donald McKinley Rakes, 89, of Kernersville passed away on May 29, 2026 at his home surrounded by family. Born in Patrick County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Clarence and Versie (Lawless) Rakes and husband to Carolyn Turner Rakes.

Donald (Don) was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. Above all else, he loved his family. He was so proud of his grandsons, Austin and Matt, and the responsible, talented young men they have become. He loved his neighbors and was considered the neighborhood "fix-it man". He loved hunting, fishing, reading, sports and country music.

Don had a tireless work ethic, always doing or fixing something. He worked for Royal Typewriter Company and owned an office machine business before working for Wachovia Bank as a technician for many, many years. He finally retired at the age of 86 after 21 years with Hanes Brand.

Donald is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; his children, Donald Ray Rakes (Mario Villeda Arteaga), Michael Lee Rakes (Robin Rakes), Yvette Pannetta Rakes (Jack Rathgeb); and his grandchildren, Michael Austin Smith and Matthew McKinley Rakes.

The family will receive friends at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home, 213 W. Mountain St. Kernersville NC 27284 on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 from 11:00AM-12:00PM. Funeral services will follow beginning at 12:00PM with Rev. Chesley Kennedy officiating. Interment will be at 2:30PM at Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery, 179 Sycamore Church Rd, Stuart, VA 24171.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to either Boys Town or NC Hunters for the Hungry.
